BARANGAY SUMAPANG MATANDA
The beauty and significance of the Filipino language is reflected well in the name of this barrio, SUMAPA. In a poets view, this is an inspiration is composing a poem. This barrio is abounded with small rivers or in the local dialect “SAPA” meaning body of water. Anywhere you are destined in the place you will pass by and encounter a “SAPA”. This word was later transformed to “SUMAPA”, there, became the name of the barrio up to the present.
The seemingly quiet barrio was divided into two districts, the eastern part which was called Sumapang Bata, and the western part as Sumapang Matanda. Since the eastern part built their own chapel, the original chapel was retained by this barrio. Thus, their patron, the Holy Cross, was acquired by Matanda. The community elders deicide them to have the Holy Cross with an image of the face of Jesus, to be their patron. This according to them symbolizes their gratitude for the sacrifice made by Jesus to save us and the forgiveness of sins. Furthermore as narrated by elders of the barrio this cross is different from others because it has image of Christ’s face without the other body parts. This meant to emphasize that the Holy image of the face explains the greet salvation being offered to us.
